About Our Dental Checkups and Cleanings for Fort Myers Patients
Regular checkups are easy to put off. A past visit may have ended with a long list of work that felt more like a sales pitch, or it was hard to tell what your insurance would cover.
For some people, the first questions are practical ones. Where do I park, are there steps at the entrance, and can I book without a long phone call?
A dental checkup, covered in more detail on our dental cleanings and examinations page, is an examination of your teeth, gums and mouth. The dentist looks for swelling, sores, gum recession, decay and pockets between the gums and teeth that can indicate gum disease, and the exam includes an oral cancer screening. At the cleaning, plaque and hardened tartar are removed with a scaler, and your teeth are polished to help protect them against plaque buildup. The team recommends a checkup at least once every six months.
At our Elite Coral Dentistry office in Cape Coral, Dr. Joseph Mejia (owner since July 2022) and the hygiene team take the time to explain what they find and why it matters. If treatment is recommended, you'll hear what is urgent and what can wait, and costs are explained after your consultation, before anything begins. Children are seen for routine checkups and cleanings too, so the whole family can keep one routine with the same practice.

Can a Fort Myers Patient Who Hasn’t Seen a Dentist for Years Book a Cleaning Without Being Judged?
Yes. Coming back after a long gap is common, and the focus is on where your mouth is today, not on how long it has been. If nerves have kept you away, our page on dental anxiety explains how we help. Your first visit starts with a conversation about your health and concerns, a thorough exam and a look at your home care routine. The cleaning follows at your next visit, and you can ask questions at every step.

Expert Advice on Dental Checkups and Cleanings for Fort Myers Patients
Here is what we focus on when a patient comes back after time away, and the signs we look for that a routine has slipped.
What to Look For When You Come Back After Years Away
- A visit that starts with listening. We begin with your health history, your concerns and your home care routine. The initial exam takes around one hour, so nothing is rushed.
- A clear view before any recommendation. Your cleaning comes at the next visit, and the dentist completes the examination after it. Recommendations are then based on a clean, clear view of your teeth and gums.
- Priorities, not a long list. We separate what needs attention now from what can be watched, and we explain why. You decide what happens next, with no pressure to accept work.
- Costs before commitment. Costs are explained after your consultation, before treatment begins, and we can help you check what your PPO plan covers.
Warning Signs Your Checkup Routine Has Slipped
- You can’t remember your last cleaning, or you cancelled one and never rebooked.
- Preventive visits on your dental plan are going unused this plan year. Check with your plan if you’re unsure what it includes.
- Your gums bleed when you brush or floss, which can be an early sign of gum disease. Our guide to why gums bleed explains the common causes.
- You’ve noticed new sensitivity, a rough filling or a sore that hasn’t healed, and meant to mention it but haven’t.
- Your health or medications have changed since your last visit. We want to know, because it can affect your care.
If any of these sound familiar, call (239) 542-4626 or message our text line at (941) 479-2183 to book.

Fort Myers, Workplace Dental Plans and Preventive Care
Fort Myers is the Lee County seat and a busy working city, and many people who live there have a PPO dental plan through work.
For anyone with a PPO plan, routine checkups and cleanings are usually the simplest care to keep up with. Most PPO dental and PPO Medicare dental plans are accepted at our office, so in-network preventive care is often straightforward for Fort Myers patients. Please call (239) 542-4626 to check your coverage before your first visit.
Busy working weeks make it easy to let a cleaning slide until something hurts. Appointments run Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, and you can book by phone, by message to our text line at (941) 479-2183 or online, whichever fits around your day.
If your checkup does show that you need treatment, the cost is explained after your consultation, before anything begins. CareCredit is also available to help spread the cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Will I Have X-Rays at My First Visit?
A. Yes. New patients, and those who haven't had X-rays for a while, are asked to have dental X-rays taken at their checkup. X-rays let the dentist check the roots beneath the gum line, which can't otherwise be seen. For new patients, the first exam takes around one hour.
Q. What Does a Hygienist Cleaning Involve?
A. Your hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar from around and between your teeth, including along the gumline, using a dental scaler, then polishes the teeth. You'll also get advice on your home care routine. For new patients, the cleaning takes place at the visit after your first exam.
Q. Do You Check for Oral Cancer at Checkups?
A. Oral cancer screening is part of the general and family dental care offered at our office. Screening allows dentists to detect early-stage cancer or precancerous lesions before symptoms become severe. If you have noticed a sore or patch that hasn't healed, mention it when you book your checkup.
Q. Where Do Fort Myers Patients Go for Checkups?
A. Fort Myers patients visit our Elite Coral Dentistry office at 1105 SE 47th Terrace in southeast Cape Coral, off Del Prado Boulevard South. The office has free on-site parking, accessible parking near the entrance and a step-free entrance, and it is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
Q. How Do I Check Whether My PPO Plan Is Accepted?
A. Call (239) 542-4626 before your visit. Most PPO dental and PPO Medicare dental plans are accepted, including plans from carriers listed on our patient information page such as Cigna, Guardian, Humana, MetLife and United HealthCare, but plans vary, so please call to check your coverage. You can also send a question to our text line at (941) 479-2183.
